Almaty sits in a region where the Eurasian Plate is compressed by the collision of the Indian plate far to the south. Major earthquakes shake the region frequently, with major events occurring multiple times per century. The 1889 Verny earthquake (Almaty was then called Verny) devastated the city with magnitude estimated around 8.3. The earthquake destroyed most buildings and killed thousands. This remains one of the largest earthquakes in the region's instrumental record. Modern Almaty was rebuilt following this disaster, but the underlying seismic hazard remains unchanged. More recent earthquakes include the 1938 Chon-Kemin earthquake (magnitude ~7.3) near Almaty, which caused significant damage. The region experiences smaller magnitude 5-6 earthquakes regularly, with magnitude 4+ events occurring many times per year. Given Almaty's large population and economic importance, seismic risk is a major consideration for urban planning and building codes.
