At 4:31 a.m. on 17 January 1994, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Northridge area of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, on a previously unmapped blind thrust fault roughly 19 km beneath the surface. Because the fault did not reach the surface, its existence was unknown to seismologists until it ruptured.

The US Geological Survey attributes 57 deaths directly to the earthquake, with some broader counts, including indirect fatalities such as heart attacks and a fire, putting the toll closer to 72. More than 9,000 people were injured and over 20,000 were left homeless.

Damage was concentrated in structures built before modern seismic codes: several freeway interchanges collapsed, including sections of the Antelope Valley Freeway (State Route 14) and the Santa Monica Freeway (Interstate 10), along with parking structures and older 'soft-story' apartment buildings whose ground floors gave way. Total losses were estimated at $20 billion or more, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in US history at the time.

Northridge exposed weaknesses in welded steel-frame buildings, which were found to have suffered hidden fractures despite appearing undamaged, prompting a nationwide revision of steel building codes. It also accelerated California's freeway seismic retrofit program and remains a benchmark case for earthquake engineering in dense urban areas built on sedimentary basins that amplify shaking.
