What to Do in an Earthquake

Before

Secure heavy furniture and water heaters, know where your gas and water shut-offs are, and keep an emergency kit with water, a torch, a first-aid kit and copies of documents. Agree a family meeting point.

During

Drop, Cover and Hold On. Get under a sturdy table, protect your head and neck, and stay away from windows. If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow. Do not run outside during the shaking — most injuries happen from falling objects.

After

Expect aftershocks. Check yourself and others for injuries, turn off gas if you smell a leak, and avoid damaged buildings. Use text messages rather than calls to keep networks free.
