Bucharest carries a high seismic risk, unusual for a capital that sits on flat plains far from any visible fault. The danger comes from the Vrancea seismogenic zone about 150 kilometres to the northeast, in the bend of the Carpathian Mountains, where a sinking slab of old oceanic crust produces powerful intermediate-depth earthquakes at 70 to 170 kilometres below the surface. Because these shocks originate deep and to one side, their long-period waves travel efficiently across the Moesian Platform and are strongly amplified by the soft sedimentary basin beneath the city, so Bucharest can suffer heavy damage even from an epicentre far away.

The defining event is the earthquake of 4 March 1977, a magnitude 7.4 Vrancea shock at roughly 94 kilometres depth that struck in the evening and killed about 1,570 people across Romania, most of them in Bucharest. Dozens of buildings collapsed outright, including modern multi-storey blocks, and around 35,000 dwellings were damaged. The disaster exposed the vulnerability of interwar reinforced-concrete apartment buildings, many of which still stand today marked with red warning dots. Earlier Vrancea earthquakes in 1802 and 1940 also shook the city hard, and seismologists consider another major Vrancea event over the coming decades to be a realistic threat, keeping retrofitting and preparedness high on the agenda.
