Ensenada, a Pacific port city about 110 km south of the US border, sits within one of the most active fault networks in North America — the southern extension of the plate boundary system that includes California's San Andreas Fault. Rather than a single clean fault, this stretch of Baja California is cut by a web of parallel structures, including the Agua Blanca and San Miguel faults, which together accommodate the shearing motion between the Pacific and North American plates.

The region's defining modern earthquake struck on 4 April 2010: the magnitude 7.2 El Mayor–Cucapah earthquake, centred roughly 100 km east of Ensenada near Mexicali. It ruptured across seven previously unmapped faults in a single 120-kilometre surface break, killed four people, injured around 100 and was felt strongly across Ensenada and into Southern California. Research into the rupture, carried out partly by scientists at Ensenada's own CICESE research centre, showed the fault system connecting through the Cucapah mountains and the Colorado River delta was far more complex than any single mapped fault had suggested.

Because Ensenada sits closer to the coastal fault strands than to the epicentre of the 2010 quake, shaking in the city itself was moderate rather than severe, but seismologists treat the wider Baja California fault network as capable of producing damaging earthquakes much closer to Ensenada in the future. CICESE and Mexico's national seismological network maintain dense monitoring across the peninsula, and Baja California's building codes account for this persistent, complex seismic hazard.
