Earthquakes in Wellington

Wellington faces a very high earthquake risk and is one of the most seismically exposed capital cities in the world. New Zealand's capital straddles the boundary between the Pacific and Australian plates, and the active Wellington Fault runs directly through the city, passing beneath the harbour, the central business district, and major transport routes. Several other major faults, including the Wairarapa and Ohariu faults, lie nearby, and the offshore Hikurangi subduction zone to the east adds the potential for very large megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis. History confirms the hazard. The enormous 1855 Wairarapa earthquake, estimated at magnitude 8.2 and one of the most powerful ever recorded in New Zealand, uplifted land around Wellington by several meters and reshaped the coastline the city is built on. More recently, the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, a complex magnitude 7.8 rupture south of the region, shook Wellington strongly, damaged buildings in the capital, and forced the demolition of several structures despite its distant epicentre. New Zealand enforces strict seismic building standards and Wellington has invested in retrofitting and public preparedness campaigns, but its position squarely on an active fault keeps residents living with constant awareness of the ground beneath them.
