The Nékor Fault is a northeast-southwest left-lateral strike-slip fault crossing the Rif mountains of northern Morocco, near Al Hoceima on the Alboran Sea coast. It forms part of the diffuse Africa-Eurasia boundary in the westernmost Mediterranean, where the two plates converge and the Alboran domain deforms internally.
The fault slips at a low rate but connects onshore Rif structures with the seismically restless Alboran Sea offshore, channeling strain through a complex network. Its trace runs through mountainous, sparsely mapped terrain, and much of the related activity occurs just offshore.
The Al Hoceima region has suffered repeated damaging earthquakes attributed to this fault system, notably in 1994 and the deadly 2004 event (magnitude ~6.4) that killed more than 600 people. The Nékor Fault is therefore a key structure in assessing seismic hazard for Morocco's northern coast.
