Seismologists consider the Guerrero Gap capable of releasing a single earthquake as large as magnitude 8.2 if the entire locked segment ruptures at once. Because Chilpancingo and Mexico City both sit on the landward side of this gap, a full rupture could produce ground shaking in the capital roughly twice as strong as the devastating 1985 Michoacán earthquake, according to hazard modelling by Mexican and international researchers. Chilpancingo itself felt strong shaking during the September 2021 magnitude 7.1 earthquake centred near Acapulco, less than 100 km to the southwest.
Part of why the gap has stayed quiet for so long may be 'slow slip' — silent earthquakes lasting weeks, detected by ocean-bottom instruments off the Guerrero coast, that release some strain without triggering a damaging quake. Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) and international partners continue to monitor the gap intensively, since it remains one of the highest-priority earthquake hazards in North America.
