Salina Cruz, a major Pacific port in Oaxaca, sits on the narrow Isthmus of Tehuantepec — the point where Mexico's coastline pinches to its thinnest and the tectonics turn unusually complex. Here the Cocos plate subducts beneath the North American plate at a steeper angle than elsewhere along Mexico's coast, and the crust runs thinner, a combination that has repeatedly generated some of the country's largest earthquakes.

On 7 September 2017, a magnitude 8.2 earthquake ruptured offshore in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, becoming Mexico's strongest recorded quake in more than a century. Although the epicentre lay roughly 100 km away, near Pijijiapan in Chiapas, the isthmus region absorbed the worst damage: the nearby city of Juchitán de Zaragoza lost half its town hall and dozens of residents, while the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center measured tsunami waves of about one metre off Salina Cruz itself. The quake killed at least 95 people, most of them in Oaxaca and Chiapas.
The isthmus remains one of Mexico's most seismically hazardous zones because of this steep, shallow subduction geometry, and because intraplate 'normal-fault' earthquakes here — where the subducting slab fractures internally rather than at the plate boundary — tend to release exceptionally strong shaking close to the surface. Mexico's National Seismological Service still records frequent aftershock-like activity around Salina Cruz years after 2017, and local building codes have been tightened in response to the disaster.
