Earthquakes in Iceland: Live Map & the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Iceland is one of the only places on Earth where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level, splitting the island roughly in two as the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart at about 2 cm a year. Nearly all of Iceland's earthquakes are shallow and linked either to this divergent plate boundary or to the country's dozens of active volcanic systems, which makes seismic swarms here a routine early-warning sign of magma movement rather than a stand-alone hazard.

The Reykjanes Peninsula, in the south-west near the capital Reykjavík and Keflavík International Airport, went from centuries of relative quiet to intense activity starting in 2020. Thousands of small earthquakes preceded a string of fissure eruptions from 2021 onward, and a swarm of over 20,000 quakes in a single month in late 2023 forced the evacuation of the fishing town of Grindavík just before a nearby eruption. Similar earthquake-then-eruption sequences have repeated at Reykjanes several times since.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (Veðurstofa Íslands) runs one of the densest seismic networks per capita in the world, tracking tens of thousands of small quakes a year across the island's volcanic zones, from Reykjanes to Bárðarbunga and Katla beneath the Vatnajökull glacier. Most events are too small to feel, but the country's history includes damaging quakes such as the 2000 and 2008 South Iceland Seismic Zone earthquakes, both above magnitude 6 — a reminder that away from the volcanoes, the transform faults linking the ridge segments can also produce strong, damaging shaking.
